Dr. Marilyn Simmons, PhD
Emotion Science Strategist & Founder of Emotionology Life
Dr. Marilyn Simmons, PhD, was not supposed to amount to much by society’s standards!
She epitomizes the statement that “Everything that we ever hope to achieve will involve a battle between what we think and what we feel”.
Raised in a shack
She was born a child of poverty in Nassau, Bahamas. Education was her way out, but it did not come easily. No electricity, no running water and minimal amounts of food in the early years made survival tough at best!
Yet, she persevered!
Dr. Marilyn graduated from high school at fifteen. At seventeen, she earned an AS in Biochemistry and began a career as a pharmaceutical chemist, working alongside world-renowned scientists involved in the development of medications such as sodium naproxen and prednisone.
Non-Traditional Student graduated Magna Cum Laude
Years later, while raising a family, she was a weekend commuter between The Bahamas and Florida, USA. Spending weekdays in school and weekends in The Bahamas, she completed a BS degree in Biomedical Science, with minors in Chemistry and Education, in just two calendar years. She graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Root of PhD research question
Dr. Marilyn is particularly interested in the plight of minority children, especially males, being labeled and corralled into less than appropriate educational settings. As such, while attending university in Florida, Dr. Marilyn often volunteered in inner-city public-school science classrooms.
Immigrant, Single Parent, Teacher
After immigrating to the United States, she taught science in these same public schools, while raising her children as a single parent.
PhD Realized
Meanwhile, Dr. Marilyn continued her educational journey by earning an MS in Biomedical Sciences and a self-designed quantitative PhD with a focus in Emotion Science. Her MS focus was neuroscience. Her PhD research question focused on whether emotions can predict achievement outcomes.
Through it all, she ran!
Additionally, Dr. Marilyn has been a passionate long-distance runner since May 1989. On January 1, 2012, she started a quest to run every day. All toll she has logged over 35,000 miles in that time period. Since May 1990, Dr. Marilyn has also completed more than 200 marathons and more than 20 ultramarathons. She has also run every day since January 1, 2012.
Breaking Patterns for High Achievers.
Currently, Dr. Marilyn combines all of her career and academic expertise to help High Achievers stay clear, steady, and effective without running themselves into the ground. She does this by helping High Achievers integrate her Emotion Science research into their everyday efforts.
